How early should I schedule my Newborn photography session?

Congratulations, you just found out you are pregnant!  What an exciting time for you!  As you revel in the joy of this new chapter in your life, you start thinking about how you want to prepare for this little one.  Baby registries, setting up a nursery, reading books about newborns and child rearing.  And scheduling a newborn photography session.  But you’re probably wondering: “how early should I schedule my newborn photography session”?  Should you wait till the baby arrives or do you need to find a photographer ahead of time?  These are great questions and believe me, I’ve been in your shoes when I was pregnant too!  This journal entry is for you!  As a Dallas newborn photographer, I will explain the recommended timeline for scheduling your newborn photography session.

When is it too soon to schedule my newborn photography session?

The simple answer is it’s never too soon.  Well…if you aren’t pregnant yet, it may be a bit too soon.  But truthfully, most sought after newborn photographers are booked months in advance.  Therefore, the best thing to do is to start your research early and schedule your newborn photographer within the first few months of your pregnancy.  Because I dedicate so much time and attention to my newborn clients to create a one-of-a-kind experience, I limit the number of sessions I offer each month.  Scheduling your session with me as early as possible is the best way to ensure your due date is still available!

What if I DIDN’T schedule my newborn photography session early?

Don’t worry!  Although it’s recommended to schedule your session early, if you didn’t get a chance to do so, it’s ok!  Many times, photographer schedules change or dates open up that were originally booked.  It’s always good to reach out to your favorite photographer and see if there’s an opening.

What if my baby is born early or comes late?

99% of the time, your baby does not arrive on his or her due date!  As newborn photographers, we know this ahead of time and plan for it.  For my clients, I schedule your session based on your due date, fully knowing you’ll most likely deliver AROUND that date but not necessarily ON that date.  Once your baby arrives, I ask that you send me a text to let me know the good news. At this point, we’ll schedule the actual date of your session.  This way, if you or your little one need more time in the hospital, I’ll make sure your session date and time works perfectly for you!

There are so many newborn photographers- which one is right for me?

There ARE a lot of talented newborn photographers to choose from which is wonderful!  Here are my top 5 tips on choosing the right newborn photographer for you:

  1. Safety First: Make sure you choose a newborn photographer who is well versed and trained in newborn safety. Newborn photography is very different from all other types of photography and you absolutely need to choose someone who will always put the safety of your baby first.
  2. Style: Photography is an art and every artist has a unique style. Spend time exploring the portfolios of potential photographers to see whose style resonates with you the most.
  3. Tailored to you: Your newborn photographer should offer services that help simplify your life. This includes dresses and hair and makeup for you to feel your best, a feeding area as well as a changing table for your little one and done-for-you artwork options so you can simply enjoy your portraits without all the work.
  4. Stellar Reviews: Read what other moms say. Did they enjoy their experience and their newborn portraits?  A strong online presence and positive feedback from past clients will help give you confidence in your choice!
  5. Preserving your Memories: While digital images are wonderful to quickly share with friends a family, they sadly won’t last the test of time. Whether it’s an album or framed wall art, choose a photographer who not only offers quality products but will create them for you.
